In honor of our last movie of the season, enjoy these amazing photos of make-up genius Jack P. Pierce working on what would become iconic hollywood figures. Scroll down for details on this week’s creature double feature screening!
“There are six ways a surgeon can cut the skull, and I figured Dr. Frankenstein, who was not a practicing surgeon, would take the easiest. That is, he would cut the top of the skull off straight across like a pot lid, hinge it, pop the brain in and clamp it tight. That’s the reason I decided to make the monster’s head square and flat like a box and dig that big scar across his forehead and have two metal clamps hold it together. The two metal studs tat stick out the sides of the neck are inlets for electricity – plugs. Don’t forget, the monster is an electrical gadget and lightning is his life force.” – Jack P. Pierce
Elsa Lanchester (bride) said Jack P. Pierce behaved as though he really had created these characters, like a god who made human beings. She said whenever she went in to be made up, he would meet her in full doctor’s lab coat and with a cold, superior attitude.
“The sole reason for any makeup, and particularly a character makeup, is not to proclaim the skill of the artist or the actor, but to help tell the story. Therefore, makeup must not be obviously ‘makeuppy.’ This in turn demands that it be supervised by a qualified artist, for the actor, no matter how skilled he may be in the technical detail of applying his makeup, rarely has the right perspective to judge the makeup without bias.” – Jack P. Pierce
