Can wine spoil and become harmful, like food?
Spoiled wine, while very unpleasant to drink, isn’t dangerous to consume in the same way that spoiled food is. The alcohol content of the wine prevents harmful bacteria from growing – and in fact this germ-killing property of wine is the very reason people started drinking it in the first place!
While many wines benefit initially from some exposure to air, they tend to deteriorate quickly soon after. A wine that has been opened too long will turn increasingly vinegary and sour.
But life’s too short to drink spoiled wine – sharing your wine with friends is the best preventative measure!
