By midwinter, the days can really start to drag. It’s a great time to shake up a routine by trying something new – like the four course menu at birch, located at 200 Washington St. in Downcity. The restaurant from Heidi and Benjamin Sukle (whose sister restaurant Oberlin is also in Downcity), features Modern American dishes inspired by New England ingredients.
birch is an intimate restaurant with only 18 seats around a u-shaped bar, which makes it perfect for a cozy outing in Downcity. Each course has three options to choose from; we tried two of the three from each. Here were our favorites.
dressed in salted scallion and leek with celery, unripe blueberry and aged beef shoyu
dressed in dried herbs and shellfish, kale and sugar kelp
with baked celeriac, salted roe and a sauce of grilled fish bones
with white chocolate, pistachio and pine
