The pop-up art show ParisParisParis! + Friends is running on Westminster Street downtown through August 28, with an opening reception every Friday evening. “Every week there’s a new show, with a whole new vibe and world of art,” said Paris, the show curator and a gallery assistant at AS220.
Paris wanted to create a free space for artists to show and sell their work in a collaborative environment. Over the course of the three weeks, up to 100 local artists will be on display through the pop-up.
And, whereas many galleries have restrictions, Paris also wanted to give artists as much creative control as possible. “They can do whatever they like, however they like, within the space boundaries,” Paris said. The result is a colorful, vibrant, rotating display of local art. “Really I created an event that I would want to go to. The pop-up itself is my own artwork.”
Since opening on August 3, Paris said locals and tourists alike have wandered into the gallery space. “Their appreciation for the space and the artwork is what motivates me,” Paris said. “It assures me that there’s a value here, providing direct access to art.”
