5 Ways to Practice Self-Care in 2023
January marks the beginning of a new year, and endless opportunities to start afresh. Whether you are someone with a long list of resolutions or prefer to take one day at a time, we think that 2023 is the perfect time to introduce a few new self-care routines. (And while you’re at it, support local small businesses in downtown Providence, RI.)
Here’s what we recommend when it comes to self-care in 2023!
1. MAKE TIME FOR SKINCARE
With wind, rain, and snow often in the winter forecast, odds are your skin and hair could use a little love! Few things are more soothing than dabbing on a soothing, all-natural, face mask from Soulita. For those with facial hair, the bourbon and vanilla scented Beard Balm from Urban Fellow Barbershop and Shave Parlour provides just the needed boost.
Or, if you’re looking for the full body experience, fill your bathtub to the brim with warm water and luxuriate in a nice Coconut Clay Bath from Soulita.
2. EAT WELL
January is a great time to refresh with wholesome, nutritious meals and snacks. Start your day—or enjoy a midday pick-me-up—with a smoothie from Rory’s Market + Kitchen. Each vegan smoothie is packed with fruits and vegetables, and available for order at the in-store cafe or for pickup/delivery. (“Oh My Greens” and “Paleo Power” are a few of our favorites.) Salads, superfood bowls, and juices are also on the menu.
Want options when dining out for dinner in downtown Providence? Check out Amaryllis! This farm-to-table restaurant is specifically dedicated to offering “clean and vibrant food that emphasizes health and happiness.” Their menu is brimming with seasonal vegetables.
3. SNUGGLE UP AND READ
One simple way to enjoy yourself is to take a seat on the sofa and read something wonderful! Throw on a soft crewneck from Civil, wrap a colorful Mexican Saltillo Blanket around your shoulders, light a Lavender Verbena scented candle from Craftland, and dive into an amusing, newly released novel—such as Yinka, Where is Your Huzband by Lizzie Damilola Blackburn—from Symposium Books.
Feeling more pensive? Get to work jotting down your thoughts and reflections in a gorgeous Craftland notebook.
4. ENJOY A HOT DRINK
Although we’ll agree that most Rhode Islanders adore iced coffee all year long, there is something lovely about a steaming hot beverage on a bitter winter’s day. Delight in fresh beans from Bolt Coffee Co while using your brand new French Press from Queen of Hearts and Modern Love! Even better- sip in a charming black and white stoneware mug from Homestyle.
Looking for something sweet with a bit more of a kick? Purchase your choice of milk and Chocolate Truffle Hot Chocolate mix from Rory’s Market + Kitchen, and then add a (generous) splash of Baileys Irish Cream from Eno Fine Wines.
5. SCHEDULE A STAYCATION
One great way to practice self-care is to treat yourself to a little staycation! First, book a night at The Dean Hotel. Grab a drink at The Dean Bar and then hit The Boombox for karaoke (both located within the hotel). The next morning, order coffee and a breakfast sandwich at Bolt Coffee Co, Small Point Cafe, or Little City Coffee & Kitchen. Spend the morning ice skating at the Bank Newport City Center, or exploring the many exhibits at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum.
After lunch, head to Westminster Street to shop local. From vintage clothing at The Vault Collective, to home decor at Homestyle, to skateboarding gear at Civil, there’s something for everyone. Make sure to purchase a ticket ahead of time for a show at either Trinity Rep or the Providence Performing Arts Center. And for dinner, we recommend checking out many of our favorite downtown businesses.
