Soup Season in Downtown Providence

There is nothing quite like warming up with a steaming bowl of soup on a cool fall day… From noodles bathed in broth, to a thick spicy chili, we love them all! Especially when soup is on the menu at our go-to restaurants in downtown Providence, RI. Here’s where we’re sipping…

CHILI

Looking for something hearty? We do feel that chili is one of the most filling soups of all time. And, you’re in luck- there are quite a few options for chili downtown! Both Durk’s Bar-B-Q and Trinity Brewhouse have signature chilis on the menu. The Brisket Chili is a staple at Durk’s all year long. It’s loaded with cheddar, sour cream, scallions, and Fritos. And Trinity serves both the Spicy Trinity Chili (it’ll be sure to fill you up) and the Vegan 3 Bean Chili, too.

Ellie’s (recently reopened and relocated to Westminster Street) has a rotating Soup Du Jour, and it’s currently a lovely Harvest Chili. Ingredients include pork, beef, red kidney beans, garbanzo beans, and tons of vegetables.

SQUASH SOUP

Butternut, acorn, spaghetti, red kuri… There are too many squashes to choose from! That’s why we’re delighted when fall rolls around and we see many of these squash utilized in delicious ways on local menus. Every year, we enjoy heading to Amaryllis on Westminster Street for their savory squash soups. Pair the soup with a cheese plate and make sure to grab a bottle of chilled wine at Eno Fine Wines, right next door (since Amaryllis is BYOB).

Providence staple Gracie’s also has a seasonal squash soup on the menu. The Roasted Winter Squash Soup is made from walnut agnolotti, brown butter apple compote, candied pepitas, parmesan, and crispy sage. Order it a la carte, or see if it’s part of Gracie’s gorgeous, elegant 5-7 course tasting menu.

NOODLE SOUP

While we can for sure be found slurping down ramen all year long, it just hits different during these colder months. One of our go-to spots during soup season in downtown Providence is Tori Tomo on Washington Street. From miso, to tomato, to—our favorite—shio, Tori Tomo has a true variety of delicious ramen flavors.

EVEN MORE SOUPS

Sura on Westminster Street is also a tasty destination for soup downtown! While we usually can be found gulping down roll after roll of sushi at Sura, their Dumpling and Yuk Gae Jang (spicy beef) soups are not to be missed. Also, Kin Southern Table + Bar has recently added a soup to their menu full of soul foods and southern comfort cuisine: Gumbo! Order a bowl of it, brimming with sausage, okra, chicken thighs, and more.
