It feels like there’s something exciting to share every week in downcity, and this week is no different: next year, two restaurants are set to move into the historic Trayne Building!

In the summer of 2023, Oberlin will relocate to a new location right across Grant’s Block at 266 Westminster Street. And just a few months before, new restaurant Gift Horse will open at 272 Westminster Street. Oberlin and Gift Horse will be connected and share the first floor of the Trayne Building in downtown Providence, RI. The two establishments are headed by Benjamin Sukle, a James Beard award winner and the owner and chef of Oberlin and birch (now closed). Bethany Caliaro, longtime manager at Oberlin, will be a partner in both restaurants.

Oberlin was originally opened at 186 Union Street in 2016. It has since then been lauded by the James Beard Foundation, New York Times, Bon Appetit, and others. The restaurant’s new location will include expanded hours (meaning brunch, we hear), an indoor wood fire, and extensive new seating with a lovely outdoor patio. The menu will continue to include the items we adore: fresh housemade pastas and breads, seasonal vegetables, and raw bar items. But the wine cellar and bar offerings will include even more variety and a delicious array of wood fired items will join the menu.

Gift Horse will open its doors in the spring of 2023. The Oberlin team shares that the “tongue and cheek saying which the restaurant borrows its name should offer a preview to the eccentric, playful tone the team hopes to achieve.” The restaurant will center around a full-service raw bar, including local shellfish, seafood, and an oyster selection from bays within Rhode Island. The drinks menu will have a variety of low alcohol by volume (ABV) and Mediterranean coast inspired cocktails, champagne, ciders, and beers.

We cannot wait to check out both restaurants. For updates about Oberlin’s current location, future location, hours, and grand opening, visit their website and follow on Instagram at @oberlin_pvd.
