Have you heard the word on the street- Mathewson Street, specifically?! A new coffee shop is coming to downtown Providence! Tomorrow, on Thursday, August 5, 2021 Little City Coffee and Kitchen will open at 170 Mathewson Street. Stop by to grab drinks that will feature both classic and unique flavors, from vanilla to strawberry rhubarb to orange blossom. (How can anyone say no to trying a strawberry rhubarb latte?)

Little City is co-owned by Kelsey Garvin and David Lanning, both coming from Dave’s Coffee, a family business. Garvin created menus and brainstormed flavors while working as culinary director for five years before embarking on the journey of opening this new coffee shop. Lanning spent the past eight years as retail director, with his focus on the coffee, overseeing the entire coffee production. Both owners bring experience and passion to the table at Little City.

“We really feel that coffee means such a specific thing to each person,” said Garvin. “We want to be somebody’s favorite coffee shop. We’ll have things they’re expecting...but also focus on seasonality by changing our pastry menu every few months while offering staples on the kitchen side of things. We will be focusing on classic flavors but twisting them in a way that’s a little different.”

Starting out, the menu will include coffee made with beans from Tandem Coffee Roasters in Portland, Maine. Lanning hopes to source from local roasters further down the line as well. A variety of savory and sweet pastries and sandwiches will be available to order. (And I can personally vouch for the deliciousness of the banana bread… Oh my gosh. Do yourself a favor and add it to your order!)

The café itself has been designed for the to-go customer, so if you’ve ever been in a hurry and wished that the wait for coffee was shorter, Little City has your back! Through thoughtful planning, the entire Little City menu will consist of items that travel well.

“We encourage people to visit us, grab a bite, have a drink, and then explore the great stuff that's going on downcity every day,” said Lanning. “A lot of people always comment about how beautiful Providence is to walk around, the architecture and everything. We're beyond thrilled about being on the street itself and adding to the streetscape downtown.”

Now for the most important details: Little City Coffee and Kitchen will be open Monday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m; closed Tuesday and Wednesday; open Thursday and Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m; and open Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
