9 Beers to Drink in Providence on National Beer Day
We think that any day is a good day to crack open a cold one... But April 7 marks National Beer Day in the United States, so we’re taking that as encouragement to enjoy a witbier in downtown Providence, RI! We chatted with owners and managers at a few of our favorite downtown beer stops, and we’ve rounded up nine beers to drink in Providence.
TRINITY BREWHOUSE (186 Fountain Street)
At Trinity Brewhouse, each beverage on tap is carefully crafted on-site. For National Beer Day, General Manager Bianca Gallagher recommends two specific beers: the classic “RI IPA” and the brand new “American Beauty.”
Ever since Trinity opened back in 1994—as one of the very first brewpub style restaurants in the area—they have served the “RI IPA.” Anyone looking to sip an old English style India Pale Ale, will likely enjoy this one for its “malty flavor, fruity aroma, dry bitter finish, and copper color.” Gallagher recommends ordering a plate of buffalo wings with it. The “American Beauty” is a cream ale that boasts a sweet beginning and a dry finish. It’s perfect for the spring season and pairs well with a burger.
Unable to choose? Simply order a flight! Want to enjoy at home? Purchase a growler at the brewhouse or at shops across the state.
THE MALTED BARLEY (334 Westminster Street)
The Malted Barley on Westminster Street always has a stunning array of rotating craft beers. They offer both beers they have brewed, and beers brewed all over the region. (We often end up ordering a colorful flight of beers because we love the variety.)
“Guests can choose from 37 draft lines and 30 flavors in bottles and cans,” shares Owner Ron Koller. And each week, 10-15 new beers are swapped in and out. While it’s hard to choose just a couple of favorites to order on National Beer Day, we at InDowncity are partial to the “Dangerine” sour by The Malted Barley, and the “Fade to White” wheat beer by Proclamation Ale. Both of these beverages pair well with two of this month’s menu specials:the cinnamon-raisin pretzel, and the apple pecan chicken salad sandwich.
ENO FINE WINES (225 Westminster Street)
For anyone planning to stay in or head to a friend’s house for National Beer Day, we recommend stopping in at Eno Fine Wines to stock up on some bottles. Domenic Merolla, general manager and buyer, recommends Long Live Beerworks as a local option.
“We're thrilled that Providence favorite Long Live has finally made the move into distributing their beers,” says Merolla. “Known for their IPA we'd be remiss if we didn't highlight their black label Double India Pale Ale Series with three different beers: Fire, Blood, and Steel; Black Cat Sees All; and Through These Eyes. Each is bold and showcases a different hop variety. “
For an international option, check out a bright and hoppy Bavarian beer: Bitburger x Deschutes Dry Hop’d Zwikl. And for those looking for a non-alcoholic beer option, check out Big Drop Brewing’s Galactic Extra Dark Non-Alcoholic Stout.
