What To Do in Providence: InDowncity’s Guide to Downtown

What to do in Providence: two people and a dog strolling downtown

Whether you’re new to the area, curious to know what we think—we love to flatter ourselves—or coming back for another glorious year of higher education (welcome back, college students), the downtown Providence scene is ever-changing. We always have an ear to the ground so we know whenever a new shop opens, or there’s a seasonal special at our go-to coffee spot. (Our instagram account is testament to this.) That’s why we’re here to help you figure out what to do in Providence, RI, specifically the downtown neighborhood!

Please note, these are some of InDowncity’s favorite spots- there’s still even more to check out in the area.

FOR COFFEE SHOPS…

Not sure where to get your caffeine fix downtown? Where to grab a quick breakfast sandwich? How about a new place to set up your laptop, pop in your AirPods, and study away? If there’s one thing we’re known for, it’s that we ADORE coffee here at InDowncity! For classic, plant-filled vibes, we usually head to Small Point Cafe. They have a great selection of food, especially for those who are vegetarian and/or gluten-free. Small Point is also a popular study spot for local students. Bolt Coffee Co—on Washington Street—is another destination where students love to set up for a study session. Check out their signature breakfast sandwich and the Woodsman Latte for a treat to keep you fueled while cramming.

Interested in grabbing a unique pastry and an iced coffee to-go while you explore the city? Little City Coffee & Kitchen is a great option! (We also love their ever-changing plant and knickknack wall.) They move quickly and always pack the goods in to-go containers so you can easily sip while adventuring, or choose to take a seat and stay awhile.

FOR STORES WITH DECOR AND DORM ROOM ITEMS…

We remember all too well what it was like to move somewhere new and realize all the things we forgot to bring with us. When we’re looking for candles, paperweights, kitchen items, mini speakers, and other home decor, we usually head to Homestyle. We also adore the selection of kitchen goods, candles, blankets, self-care items, and more right down the block at Queen of Hearts and Modern Love! If your walls are looking a little bare and need a pop of PVD, Craftland is our usual stop for art created by local artists. If you’re looking for furniture that is gorgeous and hand crafted for your home (this might be a little too gorgeous for a dorm room so this is a great option for an apartment), the newly opened Bali Bungalow store on Westminster Street impresses us every time we stop in.

FOR STYLE…

We are always on the hunt for fun outfits. As big fans of vintage and thrifted items, The Vault Collective—on Westminster Street—is always a recommended destination of ours. 70s fashion? Check. Soft flannels? Check. Timeless bags and purses? Check. If you’re interested in a more modern feel when it comes to apparel, Queen of Hearts and Modern Love is only a few shops down! The colorful, trendy lineup of dresses, tops, jackets, and more is very much coveted. (Don’t even get us started on all the earrings we’d like to spend our paychecks on…) For shoes, we always stop into Civil for their selection of sneakers. If you’re also a skateboarder or someone with an active lifestyle, we have a deep appreciation for Civil’s sweet merch. Need a haircut to go with your new fit? Make an appointment at Urban Fellow Barbershop & Shave Parlour.

FOR SELF-CARE OPPORTUNITIES…

College can be packed with learning and fun, but we’re also aware of the day to day stress. One way we love to relieve stress is by reading, journaling, and listening to music. If this sounds familiar, then Symposium Books is the perfect place for you! It can be hard to narrow down just a few titles to purchase, especially since we appreciate the selection of new and used books. The records section is also fun to browse, for those dedicated to vinyls.

FOR DINING…

We absolutely cannot share what to do in Providence without talking about all the food! There’s only so many times one wants to eat at in dining commons, after all… Sometimes, it’s great to try local food and enjoy a night out. Here’s the restaurants we recommend (in a lightning round):

FOR FUN…

We love that Providence has so many opportunities to enjoy art, music, and beautiful architecture. One big draw for locals and visitors alike is WaterFire Providence: a few times a year, watch the spectacle as the basins are lit along the river, and people weave amongst the throngs of musicians, artists, and food trucks downtown. For something else that is free and outdoors, check out the Avenue Concept’s murals and art installations spread out throughout downtown. Love theater, comedy acts, and live music? Trinity Repertory Company, the Providence Performing Arts Center, and The Strand all have stellar lineups! If you’d like to share your art, AS220 holds open mic nights, dance classes, and more throughout the year. For even more ideas, check our events calendar.

Looking for some over 21+ recommendations? We’ve got you! Check out where we like to dance, and our favorite places to sip cocktails.
